They are not the same object with different markups — one is gold alloy all the way through, the other is a coating measured in millionths of a meter. Almost every disappointing gold chain necklace purchase begins right there, in the vocabulary.

Karat tells you purity. It does not tell you quantity. The words solid, filled, vermeil and plated tell you quantity, and quantity is what decides whether the chain is still gold-colored in three years. Karat Is Purity, Not Quantity
A karat is a fraction out of 24. According to Brilliant Earth's gold karat guide, 10K gold is 41.7% pure gold, 14K is 58.3%, 18K is 75%, and 24K is 99.9%. Everything else in that mix — copper, silver, zinc, nickel, palladium — is the alloy, and the alloy does the structural work.
That is why chains are rarely made in 24K: pure gold is soft enough that many jewelers will not build a wearable one from it at all. Brilliant Earth calls 14K "significantly harder" and says it "resists daily wear," while describing 18K as "moderately soft" and "more susceptible to scratching than 14K." For a chain — hundreds of tiny load-bearing joints rather than one band — that difference compounds.
The three-digit stamps mean the same thing as the K numbers. According to the Assay Office London, UK hallmarks use millesimal fineness: 375 is 9 carat, 585 is 14 carat, 750 is 18 carat, 916 is 22 carat. A clasp stamped 585 and one stamped 14K claim identical purity. The matching figure for 10K is 417, a US standard rather than a UK hallmarking one.
Karat also changes color: more gold reads warmer, less gold reads paler. White gold is a gold alloy blended with white metals and usually finished with thin rhodium plating — so it carries a coating even when the metal beneath is solid. Solid, Filled, Vermeil, Plated: The Four Things "Gold" Can Mean
Karat answers how pure. These four words answer how much, and in the US three of them carry legal definitions with numbers attached. According to the FTC's Guides for the Jewelry, Precious Metals, and Pewter Industries (16 CFR Part 23), as summarized by the trade group The Plumb Club:
- Gold filled is a layer of at least 10 karat gold mechanically bonded to a base metal, and the gold must be at least 1/20 — five percent — of the total metal weight. That is a sheet of gold bonded to a core, not a deposit. The related labels gold overlay and rolled gold plate use the same bonding method but only have to clear 1/40 of the metal weight, which is why those pieces carry the fraction in the stamp ("1/40 12Kt RGP") — as little as half the gold of gold filled.
- Vermeil is narrower: a sterling silver base, coated with gold of 10 karat or finer, at a minimum thickness of 2.5 microns. All three conditions have to be met.
- Gold electroplate requires 10 karat gold or finer at a minimum overall thickness of just 0.175 microns — about seven millionths of an inch. Heavy gold electroplate raises that to 2.5 microns.
Solid gold has no coating in the equation: the karat alloy runs through the entire cross-section of every link, so there is nothing to wear through.

Two things follow. First, the karat number on a coating matters far less than its thickness: a 14K gold plated chain can carry less gold than a 10K gold filled chain by more than an order of magnitude. Second, "gold tone," "gold color" and "18K gold plated stainless steel" make no thickness commitment at all.
Hollow vs Solid Links
Two chains, identical karat, identical width, identical link style — and one costs three times the other. Usually the difference is air.
Solid links are gold through the cross-section. Hollow links are formed from tubing with very thin walls, letting a maker produce a chain that looks 6mm wide while using a fraction of the metal. According to Gold Buyers USA, the weight difference between comparable solid and hollow chains is often more than threefold — and gold is priced by weight.
How to spot hollow in a listing:
- Gram weight. A listing that publishes grams is being straightforward; a solid-gold listing that will not is worth a question to the seller.
- Width against price. A wide chain at a narrow chain's price is hollow, semi-solid, or not gold at all.
- The words. "Puffed," "semi-solid," "lightweight," "tube," and of course "hollow."
The durability difference matters more than the price one. Frost NYC notes that hollow gold dents more easily than solid gold, and that a dent can make a piece extremely challenging to repair. Bench jewelers give the reason: as Martin Gear Jewellers explains, the thin walls of a hollow link mean solder can burn straight through, so the repair takes more skill and is rarely as invisible as on a solid chain. A crushed solid link can usually be rebuilt; a collapsed hollow one often cannot.

What a Gold Chain Necklace Should Cost
Solid gold has a price floor, and the floor moves with the market. According to JM Bullion's live spot price chart, gold traded at roughly $4,387 an ounce — about $141 a gram — on August 14, 2026.
Run the arithmetic. A 14K alloy is 58.3% gold, so one gram of 14K holds about 0.58 grams of pure gold — roughly $82 of raw metal at that price, before refining, drawing wire, soldering hundreds of links, the clasp and everyone's margin. So what is that $19 listing? Usually gold plated over brass or steel, gold filled with the weight fraction buried in the bullets, or a variant listing where the headline price buys the shortest length in the cheapest finish.
Gold filled and plated chains barely track spot price, because so little of their mass is gold — the appeal at the low end and also the risk. Its own copy is inconsistent on width — the title says 1mm, the bullets say roughly 1.3mm. BENIQUE states the metal is tarnish resistant and will not discolor or cause skin irritation.
Who it is for: gold filled at the lowest entry price, or one chain that works as a choker and as a short necklace. The trade-off: the same listing sells a 925 sterling silver version, so the variant you pick changes the metal as well as the price.
Best Plated Chain to Test a Look: Girluky Gold Plated Sterling Silver Rope Chain

Who it is for: trying on a style and a width for the price of lunch. The trade-off: with no stated thickness, nobody can tell you how long the gold color lasts.
How to Read a Gold Chain Listing
Work down this list before adding anything to a cart. Every item is answerable from the listing page, and a missing answer is itself an answer.
- The construction word. Solid, filled, vermeil, or plated. If the listing never says, assume plated.
- The stamp claimed. "14K," "585," "1/20 14K GF." A gold filled piece should tell you the fraction.
- Width in millimeters. Not "dainty," not "chunky." A number.
- Length, and whether it is adjustable. Adjustable listings quote a range; the shorter figure is the fixed part.
- Clasp type. Lobster claws are more secure than spring rings, and on a valuable chain the clasp is the failure point.
- Gram weight, on anything sold as solid gold. The single most useful number on the page.
- Whether the price is variant-dependent. Which Gold Chain Necklace Should You Buy

If it has to carry a pendant, go up in width and choose solid over hollow. The link that fails is usually the one bearing the bail — the loop on the pendant that rides the chain. A hollow link under a constant point load is the worst combination available.
If you wear it occasionally — one outfit, a few times a year — plated is a rational purchase. A finish good for a couple of years of light wear suits a piece worn a dozen times.
Under $50, gold filled is the best value here: a bonded layer of at least 10K gold at no less than 5% of the piece's weight, for the price of a plated mall-brand chain. Over $150, solid 14K is within reach at fine gauges, and the coating question disappears for good.
